Websites

Overview
A website is a place on the internet where a person or people (example a business website) are in complete control of the information, no one can add or edit the information except the person who created it or who they have given access through permission and passwords.

Strength
Complete control, great for static information that you need to put on the internet for students. Can have video, pictures, links and other external items. Information is generally static and to be available for a longer period of time.

Weakness
Not to be used for collaborative work. If someone accesses the password and changes it it would create havoc.

Opportunity
Great for static information that needs to be on for a longer period of time, for example term overviews, assessment details, links to websites that are required for students to access to complete tasks. Students can also create their own website to demonstrate knowledge of a topic.

Threat
Possible password insecurity and copyright requirements need to be adhered to. Bullying may be an issue if a student creates a website.

Compatibility to learning style
Great for a variety of learning styles, it can be adapted to suit most students.

Websites can be used in a multiple of ways that use different learning theories, examples include

Meaning to me

I will be using a website to "put up" static information so that students can access it at home and have no excuses on availability of course, assessment or assignment information.

  1. Hi Tanya,
I like the idea of creating a website for students to access appropriate information for certain topics. Some students with additional learning needs struggle with finding useful information on the web, they could benefit from information, links, videos and images uploaded on the one easily accessible website. The only concern would be the need to use a variety of sources for the students to choose from.

  2. Hi Sarah
To me a website can be as elaborate or simple as you need, some websites can just have internal links needed to complete a course, whereas another can have multiple links to outside information that students need to troll through to gain understanding. The benefit with static websites is that once the information has been uploaded you only need to make small changes, rather than having to reinvent the wheel all the time.
