Concept Maps

Concept Maps are a plan or overview of a topic or subject, from an individualistic point of view.

Strength
Shows linkages and how subjects interweave to form the overall big picture. Due to the picture / graphical representation it is very good for visual learners. This is a form of information organizer, and would help students to gain better organization skills

Weakness
When you try and put too much information into the one concept map it may become too hard to understand or in the case of online use too hard to read. Also due to you only being able to put a few words in each box it can be hard to capture the essence of the individual topic (bubble).

Opportunity
This would work really well for an overview of a terms work or subject, it can be introduced at the start of a term or subject and reviewed so students know that they are on track. This is also really good for mind mapping and individuals to complete during the learning experience and then to review before exams.

Threat
Care needs to be taken to ensure all necessary information is included or students understand that it is only a one word / short passage to help them organize and remember information.
This should not be used for indepth information but as an information organiser, overview or review tool.

Compatibility to learning styles
Compatible to visual and linguistic learners, but as it is a graphic organiser it is good for all students.

What learning theory it is most used for (links to this blog site)
Concept maps can be used for Constructivism or Social Constructivism.

Meaning to me
Concept maps are a habit of mind to get the students into as already stated it is a great overview and a great way for them to review before a test. I will definitely be using concept maps in the classroom.
