Podcasting

Overview
"Podcasting involves making an audio file (usually in MP3 format) of content that is updated frequently (i.e. a weekly radio program) available for automatic download so users can listen to the file at their convenience. The term Podcasting comes from the popular iPod music player from Apple Computer, however the technology is not limited to using an iPod" (ComputerConsultantsAgency, 2010).
Strengths
Great to use when there is a series of audio or visual presentations that need to be viewed. Due to the presentation being uploaded to the internet, all students have access to the presentation.

Weaknesses
Students that have limited internet access are disadvantaged. Care must be taken to ensure that the podcast is ready at the predetermined time, example every Monday, it must be uploaded on that day. It is a static tool, students can not interact with the presentation like they can in programs like Vyew.

Opportunities
Good learning tool, or a way for students to demonstrate learning. Different weeks can be allocated to students and they have to create a presentation explaining what was learned in the last session or week. Teachers can use podcasts to ensure all students have the same information.

Threats
Due to the static nature of this tool it is important that it is used correctly, and not for collaborating purposes.

Compatibility to Learning Styles
Good with audio and visual learners, and the planning need to create a podcast is suited to a host of other styles as well. A teacher created podcast would be a good tool for people with disabilities because they can review it multiple times.

Meaning to me
A good tool to use for static information, and I have seen it used successfully in University lessons, but I feel that it is best used for students to create a podcast or for distance learning. A movie maybe a better option, because it does not need to be as frequent. On the upside students would love making a podcast and to be able to watch it on their Ipod.
